I bought this cartridge at my local Walmart 9/12/19 and installed it. It printed maybe 50 pages (of the expected 190) before becoming unusable (prints blank pages). Walmart will not take it back because it's been opened (and because it's been longer than 90 days as well). HP Sales said Tech Support can help me, but I'm unable to contact Tech Support (their support website is poorly designed--if there is a way to contact them I can't locate it). Has anyone been able to get HP to replace a defective cartridge that wasn't bought from them? I did all of the software attempts to fix it and nothing worked (the Ink Level in the HP software says about 1/3 left). I have since replaced the cartridge with another one and that one works perfectly.

I called the number you gave me and it would not connect me to a live agent without getting a case number from the virtual agent. I am unable to get a case number from the virtual agent, so I am going to throw out the cartridge and NEVER purchase anything from HP ever again. The amount of effort required to get a live agent is way too over the top.

Maybe HP would help - used cartridges (one third ink remaining) may - or may not - be covered under the normal warranty.
Our community has no way to judge and no direct means to find an answer to this question.
In so much that I am aware,
The case submission process for an ink cartridge is pretty much the same as for submitting a case for any HP device.
Normally the case submission process is straight forward.
- Submit the case online > provide the necessary information > explain the problem > submit the request for help
- After the case is submitted, contact options available for your local area are displayed on your screen.

Reminders
- Use the serial number of the device to submit the case (do not post that information on the Community).
- Chat is not available in every region. In those areas where Chat is an option, Chat service hours are likely restricted. In the event that Chat is not available in your region: Call the number provided in the HP directory, else submit your case online (to receive phone contact information)
- HP will advise you there is a fee for phone support and / or other services when your computer / device is no longer under warranty. This is normal business practice.
- HP may tell you that certain services are not covered under warranty. This is normal business practice. Standard Warranty typically covers specific hardware issues as explained in the Warranty contract. Care Pack coverage and warranties differ by package.
- If the HP Contact (phone) number is not immediately provided: Contact information is displayed on your screen after you submit your case online.
- HP websites are the only ones allowed to use the HP copyright circle/logo. Look for the copyright on any website claiming to be HP. If in doubt, scroll to the bottom of the Website to find HP copyright logo.

That said,
The caveat to this whole procedure is that a used ink cartridge is not a computer or a printer - there might actually be "something" more difficult about submitting a case for a device for which you have no serial number.
Possible oddness in mind,
- I will ask that someone take a look.
- Know that because we are not HP Technical Support, we are not a direct conduit to HP Support.
- Should there be a response, the moderator / agent will (should) post back here before using other methods to contact you.
- Do not contact random numbers posted in a public or private message by “new members”. Vermin are looking for victims.
Note to those reading:
- Please do not post any personal information here - we cannot make use of the data.
- Posting personal information at a public site places your privacy at risk from vermin.

The second part of my response is Commentary - that is, a personal opinion only:
Call centers all over the world are overwhelmed with people like you - some of whom desperately need help - the wait to speak to an agent (once you have your contact number) might be frustratingly long. Consider whether the ordeal is worth the return.

Thank you for your response. This is what I've done: I created an account & logged in. I entered the search term "HP 61 Ink Cartridge" under Support and got zero results. I then entered in my Printer model and serial number (warranty is expired) and "Visit the HP Support Community" is the only option it gives me--so here I am. Hopefully your contact gets back to you, as this appears to be the only way I can contact anyone in Tech Support.
