HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

it said ink was low so I put in all new cartridges.  Never had a problem doing that before.  This time, when I put in the new cartridges it came back saying "there is a problem with the printer or ink system"  I've tried all the turn off/on, lift the cartridge arm and wiggle, etc., etc.  Can't figure out what other problem there could be or whether I need to drag it to best buy to see about getting it repaired.  Any thoughts.

Hi @barbara203

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That error message can be frustrating, especially since you've never had trouble replacing cartridges before.

Let's go through some structured troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve it before considering a repair.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

2. Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Inspect them for any damage or leaks.
  • Ensure they are genuine HP cartridges (HP's Dynamic Security can sometimes block third-party cartridges).
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly and ensure they click into place.

3. Clean the Printhead

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  • Remove the printhead carefully.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes before reinserting.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit HP’s official support page for your printer model here.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Restart the printer after updating.

5. Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup > Tools > Printer Status Report.
  • If errors persist, try Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.

6. Perform a Semi-Full Reset (Advanced)

  • Press and hold # and 3 while turning the printer on.
  • If the issue persists, try # and 6 instead.

Let me know how it goes! If you need more details on any step, I’m happy to refine the instructions further.
