HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Been getting the missing or failed printhead error since I changed the cyan cartridge.  I have done a full reset.  replaced the ink cartridge, and even replaced the printhead.  The printer would only work for two days with the new printhead before the error returned.  I even got the printer from my mother-in-laws office and brought it over.  the ink was out, so i moved my cartridges into it.  a day later the error cropped up on this printer.  MY old printer had 57,000 pages through it,  The MIL printer had 2,000 pages through it, nearly new.  what is going on?   Has HP put a 'obsolete' mode into the firmware to force you to buy a new printer?

@daswede, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding missing or failed printhead error!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you've already tried some good steps in troubleshooting the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715. Let's go over a few more options to help you resolve the "missing or failed printhead" error:

1. Check for Firmware Updates:

Sometimes, issues like these can be resolved by updating the printer’s firmware. HP may have released updates that improve compatibility or fix known bugs.

  • Go to the HP support website and search for your printer model or click here to download the latest firmware update.
  • Check if there’s a newer firmware version available and follow the instructions to update it.

2. Check the Printhead Connections:

Ensure that the printhead is properly seated and making a good connection with the printer. Even though the printhead is new, sometimes there can be an issue with alignment or connection.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printhead access area and remove the printhead.
  • Gently clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and inside the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the printhead and check if the error persists.

3. Perform a Clean Printhead Procedure:

HP printers have a built-in cleaning cycle for the printhead, which can help resolve issues with printhead functionality.

  • On your printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to clean the printhead.

4. Check the Cartridges:

Since you've replaced the cartridges, it's worth verifying if the new ones are fully functional or if there's a defect.

  • Try using a different brand or batch of cartridges.
  • Ensure that the cartridges are seated correctly in their respective slots.

5. Inspect for Blockages or Residue:

Sometimes, ink residue or dried ink can clog the printhead, causing the error to appear. Gently wipe the printhead with a damp cloth (preferably with distilled water) to remove any visible residue.

6. Hard Reset the Printer:

Even though you've done a full reset, try performing a hard reset to see if it clears any lingering software issues:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 5 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

7. Try a Different Power Source:

In some cases, power issues can cause the printer to malfunction. If the printer is connected to a power strip or surge protector, try plugging it directly into a wall outlet.

8. Test with HP Smart App or HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Use the HP Smart App or HP Print and Scan Doctor to check for additional diagnostic options and troubleshooting steps. These tools can sometimes identify issues that are not immediately visible.

Let me know how it goes!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
