hi,
am scanning lots of documents and thought i would try setting up a smart task.
i click on the icon in the hp printer assistant, it loads a page asking me to get started or login.
i click get started, it says unable to log you in
i click login - it says unable to log you in
the printer is fine, just scanned 20 docs , the internet is fine
the chromebook is fine
is there any way to fix this
i tried logging into my account - that is fine, and tried again after logging in to my account online but says the same error message when i try to use smart tasks even though i can see i am already logged in!

Thanks @ShlomiL .
Excellent!
Makes sense - and means that I was indeed a bit lost. Sigh.
The Android application (on a proper Android) device would likely work - my suggestion to use an "Apple" flavor phone / tablet just comes from knowing that these devices do indeed support the operations (at least here in the USA). I do have an old Android phone that I use only for, well, phone calls. Smiling.
May the summer heat be cooled by temperate breezes.

I am not at all sure what you are doing - I cannot break my own HP Smart after trying several times in different ways to confound the setup. Add to that my complete lack of knowledge of Chrome OS.
OK - based on what I found, using HP Smart on Windows 10, an attempt to at least sort what is happening:
HP Smart is available on mobile devices and on Windows 10. Apparently "mobile" devices includes Chrome OS.
HP Smart provides a method to create shortcuts to simplify printing tasks - these shortcuts are called "Smart Tasks" in the HP Smart software.
For the most part, HP Smart works as installed. The "Smart" software does work much better when you are logged into the account you have used to create (and log into) your HP Connected Account.
Side Bar
HP Connected is the controlling software for your ePrint / mobile printing setup. Although it is not mandatory (at least not in my experience), you can decide to create your HP Connected account under the same email login ID as you use for logging into your HP Community account. What if? If you created your ePrint / Mobile / HP Connected account under a different email login ID and you wish to change it, you can change the login ID (which effectively changes the "owner" of your HP Connected account).
To create a Smart Task
- Open your HP Smart application / software
- In the upper right corner of the HP Smart menu / window, click the little person icon
- Open to Sign into your HP Connected account ID (which is perhaps the same as the ID you use to log into this community)
Examples
HP_Smart_Windows10_Start_Screen_1
Once you are logged in, you can create a Smart Task (shortcut).

Hi Dragon-fur (very nice screen name btw),
thank-you for your time and detailed information, however my chrome os ( chromebook) is very different to your windows layout - I will try and pop a screenshot below.
so;
I can log in by going to hp.com, and use this forum
I can use the HP smart app to print and scan - but on firther checking I am apparently not logged in, because..., it loads a new HP screen, a blue loading bar flashes across the screen int he middle for a bit and then it just goes back to showing the previous page with the blue button saying sign in.
I have tried closing and opening the app.
I have tried shutting down and restarting the chromebook ( several times)
I have tried changing my password - successfully, but still not showing me as logged in anywhere other than on HP .com and still not actually offering me the opportunity to sign in - it never gets as far as asking me for a user name or password, just reloads the page.
there si no person on my display, there are three dots and the options are 1. app settings, 2.help center and 3. About
when I click 1. app settings, there is a big blue bar / button asking me to sign in. I tried that, it just reloads the page, every time.
When I go back to the homescreen ( hopefully I can put a pic below) I can select smart tasks, and that loads a web page that says...
get started, or
already have smart tasks set up - sign in
tried both options, multiple times, just loads the hp page with the loading bar and then the error message is the same for both options "uh-oh, we were unable to log you into your hp account"
(see photo below)
I only wanted to set up smart tasks as with the app, you have to go to the homescreen, select scan to email ( there is no scan button, only scan to email) and then the next page click scan, wait for the page to scan ( if it does not you have to go back and start again), then another page loads, it asks you to crop the image or not, click next, on the next page you have to click on save every time as it always loads with share as the default option, it also always loads jpeg as the default option and I need pdf, so select both of those, then it saves it to the hp scanned files folder - no choice to save it elsewhere. then you have to go back to the homescreen, and select the hp scanned items folder, on the next page select the item, then select share - yes share of all things, then you can select save to computer, then you can select where to save it - and this for every sheet you need to scan.
on the windows version you can scan several sheets at once, and save the whole thing wherever you like ( I used to have a windows PC) but with the app - which is all that is available for the chromebook, it is sooooooo long winded, unnecessarily so - you would think after the 50th page ti would realise I want pdf and save to the folder I want on my chromebook.
hence thinking - aha - smart task - that must be how HP expects me not to pull my hair out and make things easier, however, this has been quite a vexing experience and whilst waiting for help from HP I have manually scanned in another 87 documents and managed not to microwave the printer in frustration, although the thought still brings a smile 😉
I am not a technical person, and hope there must be a better way to do this, and hope that there is a button, somewhere , that lets me be logged in , in a way, where hp will let me use the functions of the smart tasks that they have kindly made to go with this printer, but alas I just cannot figure it out and have had enough of the constant loop of "uh-oh"
ok, going to try to add screen shots so you can see what I mean...

Well, rats. (Technical term that indicates frustration)
I would guess that I am missing something OR that the application is not fully compatible with your OS.
The result from my perspective is that I cannot tell the difference.
The User Guide does not mention using HP Smart and (instead) instructs the user to download and use the "HP Print for Chrome" application from the Chrome Web Store.
User Guide > Page 29
Chromebook: Download and install the HP Print for Chrome app from the Chrome Web Store to enable both Wi-Fi and USB printing.
To make it more confusing (at least to me), while the information in EWS confirms that "Smart Tasks" exists as a supported feature on my Officejet Pro 9025, it only hints at what should (can) be done to create / use the feature.
I cannot guess whether the Embedded Web Server on your printer looks similar - the two printers are very different models - this might be another dead-end or it might be evidence that the application is at least recognised in your setup. ??
Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
More disappointing:
- One cannot "create" an account from within EWS.
- Nothing in this section indicates whether the operation is Operating System dependent.
EWS_9025_Scan_Smart_Tasks_1.
If you have another mobile device (an iPhone or an iPad, for example), it would be worth trying the application in that arena - if nothing else, there may be a difference in the setup.
I am sorry I am flapping about like a fish on land - I am convinced I am wasting your time and yet I cling to the hope that something we have discovered is useful to you.
I am likely feeding this customer incorrect information. Many rats in a barrel.
I am lost in a foreign environment of Chrome OS and the Deskjet printer.
The Smart App does seem to indicate that Smart Tasks are supported (seem customer image); the login is not working and the access to the setup beyond that step is unavailable.
I suggested that the login might actually be different. As an example, I did use (for reasons that I don't recall) a different HP Connected login than the HP account login I use for everything else. Every so often, I would trip over the "different" USERID and have to remember to use the "other" login credentials. This does not appear to be what is happening.
Is the application even supported?
If yes, what is wrong with this stubborn software?
Many Thanks in Advance!

Hi,
May you have any Android device you may try using HP Smart and see if it even lists Smart Tasks for your printer there and if you may see any different results?
Although Android Apps may work on Chrome OS, the app is officially supported on Windows 10 Mac OS, Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later or Apple iOS 11 or later.
Generally, Chrome OS handles Android apps differently than Android OS, the HP Smart app is not designed or optimized for Chrome OS:
https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/7021273?hl=en
Regarding the EWS information @Dragon-Fur - OJ Pro 9020 is the only printer currently supports Smart Tasks usage from the printer front panel, EWS of any other models will not have any dedicated Smart Tasks option within its EWS page.
Regarding the Smart Tasks feature usage, I would guess it will likely respond differently on a supported operating system.

Thank-you dragon-fur,
I do really appreciate you taking the time to try to help.
SO - different account - highly possible, I may indeed have set up a different HP account somewhere at some time, I am a bit bonkers like that, or forgetful ( or indeed forgetful and bonkers)
- android app not for chrome OS - yes indeedy - that is the most likely culprit - I come across this issue all of the time, yes chrome os is super useful to those of us needing accessibility settings, but that is wheere the chromebooks usefulness ends ( oh and it loads up super fast). I tried the chrome extension - it took me back to the late 70's and my texas intrument computer - and yet felt the Ti would have offerered more functionality and better graphics - it is bad, oh so bad, and only allows you to print, nothing else. That is why I went to the google play store and got the HP smart app, which allows me to print and scan and lots of other things, but assume that the additional functionality of the smart tasks is for android only - I do have an android tablet somewheere - I may have a go on that - thank-you and SchlomiL for the advice of trying it on an android platform.
it may very well be showing me functionality that does not belong to my printer because it is getting confused on a chrome OS.
I feel that we have exhausted all possible options and the most likely, is as it oft turns out to be, a chrome OS fail ( or lack of compatibility )
Thank-you for trying to help and I hope your evening is full of wonder.

@fruit_tree, I would also suggest using the WebScan interface within the printer EWS page, that should provide basic Scan capabilities on Chrome OS too:

Hope that may help,
Shlomi
