@panther60,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

The LPT1 Error on your HP DeskJet 4200e typically refers to an issue with the connection between your printer and the computer via the LPT1 port, which is a parallel port for older printers. Below are all the troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

1. Check the Printer Connection

  • Physical Connection:
    • If you're using a parallel cable (LPT port), ensure that it's securely connected to both the printer and the computer.
    • Check the cable for any visible damage. If it appears faulty, replace it with a new one.
  • Use a Different Port:
    • If possible, try connecting the cable to a different LPT port on your computer. In case you're using an adapter, ensure it's functioning properly.

2. Check Printer Power

  • Make sure your HP DeskJet 4200e printer is powered on.
  • Check if any lights on the printer are blinking or flashing, as this could indicate an error.

3. Restart Devices

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer and wait for a minute before turning it back on. This can help reset any internal errors.
  • Restart the Computer: Reboot your computer to refresh the system and allow it to detect the printer correctly.

4. Verify Printer Settings

  • Check Printer Configuration:
    • In Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP DeskJet 4200e and select Printer Properties.
    • Under the Ports tab, ensure the correct port (LPT1) is selected.

5. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Sometimes corrupted or outdated printer drivers can cause communication issues.
    • Uninstall the current printer drivers from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your HP DeskJet 4200e.
    • Reinstall the drivers and make sure to follow the installation prompts carefully.

6. Update Windows

  • Ensure that your operating system is fully updated, as outdated system files or drivers can interfere with printer connectivity.
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.

7. Check Printer Queue

  • Open the Printer Queue on your computer and check if there are any stuck print jobs. Clear the queue if necessary.
  • You can access the queue by right clicking the printer icon under Devices and Printers and selecting See what's printing.

8. Disable Bi-directional Support (if applicable)

  • Sometimes, bi-directional communication between the printer and computer can cause issues with older printers.
  • To disable it:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer, select Printer Properties > Ports.
    • Uncheck the Enable Bidirectional Support option if it's enabled.

9. Check for Conflicts in Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager on your computer (right-click on the Start menu > Device Manager).
  • Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and check if your LPT port is listed without any warning signs (yellow triangle).
  • If there is a warning, right-click on the port, select Uninstall, and then restart your computer to reinstall the port.

10. Try a USB Printer Cable (if applicable)

  • If you're still facing the LPT1 error and your printer supports USB connectivity, you might consider switching to a USB connection, as parallel ports are becoming obsolete, and some computers might not have them.

11. Test the Printer on Another Computer

  • If possible, connect your HP DeskJet 4200e printer to another computer using the same cable and port to see if the problem persists. This can help you identify if the issue is with the printer or the original computer.

12. Reset the Printer

  • As a last resort, try resetting the printer to its factory settings. This can sometimes resolve deep system errors, but you’ll lose any customized settings.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
