OS Mac Sonoma 14.6.1
Got message "printer cover is open error message" for my hp deskjet 6980. I replaced ink cartridges that weren't working well with genuine HP cartridges. $$ I got the error message and none of the tips I have seen online have helped.

Hi @Gene303 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the "printer cover is open" error message on your HP Deskjet 6980dt could be caused by several factors, even if the cover is closed. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:
1. Ensure the Cover is Properly Closed
- Double-check that the printer cover is firmly closed. Sometimes it might look closed, but a slight misalignment could trigger the error.
- Gently press down on the cover to ensure it's securely latched.
2. Inspect the Cover Sensor
- The printer has a small sensor or switch that detects whether the cover is open or closed. If this sensor is misaligned, blocked, or malfunctioning, it might cause the error.
- Check for any debris, dust, or obstructions near the hinges or cover sensor that could prevent the sensor from functioning correctly.
- If you're comfortable, gently clean the area around the sensor with a soft cloth.
3. Re-seat the Ink Cartridges
- Open the cover, remove the ink cartridges, and then reinsert them firmly.
- Make sure they are properly seated in their slots and that no debris is blocking the cartridges from being fully inserted.
4. Perform a Power Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.
- This can sometimes reset the internal sensor and clear the error message.
5. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause communication errors.
- You can check for firmware updates via HP's website or HP Smart app.
6. Use a Different Power Outlet
- Plug the printer into a different power outlet to rule out any issues related to the power supply.
7. Reconnect the Printer
- Remove the printer from your Mac (System Preferences > Printers & Scanners), then re-add it.
- Ensure that your Mac is running the latest version of macOS Sonoma to avoid compatibility issues.
8. Try Resetting the Printer
- Some HP printers have a specific reset procedure that might clear the error. Check your user manual or HP's support site for reset instructions specific to the Deskjet 6980.

I hope this helps.

The problem was a broken plastic arm that pivots to signal the door being opened or closed. It is behind a cover on the right side of the printer. In one position, it indicates the door is closed which is required for the printer to print or send information about the ink supply levels and in the other position, it indicates the door is open which is required to load or unload the ink cartridges (a barrier is in place when the door is closed). The plastic arm did not look very robust.
