A red "X" on your HP ENVY 6055e typically indicates a critical error with the printer's hardware (like cartridges or a paper jam) or a connectivity issue. Since you are using a cable connection, the problem is likely related to the cable, driver, or general printer status.
Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Step 1: Perform Basic Checks and Power Reset
- Check for printer errors: Look for any other blinking lights or error codes on the printer's control panel, as this can help narrow down the problem (e.g., E0 for a cartridge or hardware fault).
- Inspect the USB cable: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected at both the printer and the PC ends. The cable should be no longer than 3 meters (approx. 9 ft 10 in) and undamaged. Try a different USB port on your computer, ideally a port directly on the machine and not a USB hub or docking station.
- Power cycle the devices:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds to ensure a full reset.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet (avoid surge protectors if possible) and the printer.
- Turn the printer on.
- Restart your Windows 10 computer.
- Step 2: Check for Hardware Issues
- Ink cartridges: Open the cartridge access door and ensure the cartridges are correctly installed. Remove and reinsert them, and gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridges and the printer with a lint-free cloth. Make sure you are using genuine HP cartridges.
- Paper jams: Check for any jammed paper or obstructions in the paper input tray and all accessible doors.
Step 3: Run Diagnostics and Reinstall the Driver- Use Windows Troubleshooter:
- Select the Start button, then go to Settings > Update & Security (or System > Troubleshoot in newer versions).
- Select Other troubleshooters, choose Printer, and then select Run. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the official HP website to automatically diagnose and fix potential problems.
- Reinstall the printer software/driver: The existing driver might be corrupted.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- In Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP ENVY 6055e and choose Remove device.
- Uninstall any HP printer software from the Control Panel under Programs or Apps & features.
- Restart your computer.
- Download the latest full driver/software package (HP Easy Start or HP Smart app) for your Windows 10 (32-bit) system from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the prompts. Connect the USB cable only when instructed by the setup program.
Step 4: Clear the Print SpoolerIf jobs are stuck in the print queue, clearing the print spooler service can help.- In the Windows search box, type services and select the Services desktop app.
- In the list of services, double-click Print Spooler.
- Select Stop, then select OK.
- In the search box on the taskbar, type %WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers and select the folder in the results.
- Delete all files in that folder.
- Go back to the Services window, double-click Print Spooler again.
- Select Start, ensure Startup Type is set to Automatic, and select OK.
- Try printing again.
