macOS 10.14 Mojave

Hi, I am at uni connecting my laptop, hp8600 through the uni router where I have to allow and register the product mac address. both laptop and printer are registered on the same uni portal for wifi and not direct wired the router as I don't have one.

my laptop is a mac air on Mojova 10.14.5 os

The printer is a hp Officejet pro 8600

Laptop works with printer fine via hardwire and i have all software downloaded.

Laptop will not print wirelessly to the printer and cannot find the printer

Laptop will print via direct wireless - go to wifi signal top of screen find hp printer connect to that wifi print- all good.

Laptop can not wirelessly print to the printer as cannot find printer and or printer is idle.

Is this likely something to do with mac filtering at uni as i don't have own router or is there a magic button im not pressing.

@moppatop, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Check if MAC filtering is enabled on the router. If yes, you will have to add the printer's MAC address on the router under 'Allow' list.

Do you have any Anti-virus software installed on your MAC?

Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.

This printer supports only 2.4GHz network.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Restart the network devices

  1. Turn off the Router, Printer, and the computer/ mobile devices.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn on the Router first and wait for all the lights to stabilize.
  4. Turn on the printer and allow it to configure itself.
  5. Turn on the computer/ mobile devices.

Reset the network settings and reconnect the printer to the network

On the printer screen, go to Setup > Network > restore network defaults

Go back to Network menu > Wireless > Wireless setup wizard > choose your network.

Once the printer is connected, check the connectivity between the printer and the MAC

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Let me know how this goes.
