hp officejet 8600 pro premium
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We own two hp Officejet 8600 pro premium printers.  When the power goes out during a bad storm or ConEd shortcoming, we have to re-connect our printers to the network. While one of them reconnected with little issue, the other refused eventually showing a "There is a problem with the printer or ink system." error message. This eventually went away but was replaced with a new error message where the printer is now not accepting new HP authentic black ink cartridges.

There's no issue with the printer head as it was swapped out and tested with another 2 that we have. I don't see any bent pins internally. It's updated to the latest firmware. The black ink cartridges are authentic and purchased new from Office Depot.

The printer refuses to print or perform any alignment or other troubleshooting until an accepted black ink cartridge is installed. The other three colors are shown to be halfway depleted despite being brand new.

Updating the firmware breaks the printer. I've had the same problem and HP don't want to help. You 8600 is old so they'd prefer you to buy a new HP printer. That's why they intentionally broke your one.

Did you perform a firmware update recently? It breaks the printer

Thank you for your reply, I haven't updated the firmware recently. The version I'm using is the latest one listed on the official HP software and drivers webpage: Oct 31, 2020 - version 2011A. I updated this firmware some months back but the cartridge issue has only affected one of our hp Officejet 8600 pro premium printers as of last week - the other one of the same kind/model works normally.

It seems to do something with reading the chips on the cartridges. They're trying to stop use of third party ink. For me it doesn't even read genuine HP cartridges. Shambles.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. While we have used third party inks in the past, we've only been using official HP ones and this printer isn't accepting the black cartridges now

I recently tried doing a partial reset and now the printer is back to displaying, "There's a problem with the printer or ink system."

Unfortunately I think you have to pay for the pleasure of customer service from HP. They don't seem to really care.
