Brand new printer fresh from the box.

Appears to be fully working apart from refusing to scan document from document feeder.

The document feeder is working as you can copy documents using the document feeder.

It appears not to detect the document in the feeder when scanning and instead scan a blank document from the glass plate.

Any suggestions welcome before I box it up and return it to the retailer.

@DavidBridges,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Make sure you have the latest version of the printer software, and then make sure your printer is connected to your computer.

  1. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.

  2. Type your printer model, and then click Download next to the full feature driver under Driver-Product Installation Software.

Click Download next to the full feature driver

  3. Follow the guided setup instructions to connect the printer.

  4. After the software installs, search Windows for HP, and then select your printer to open HP Printer Assistant.

    NOTE:

If HP Printer Assistant does not download with your printer software, go to What other scanning methods or apps are available in Frequently asked questions (FAQs).

  5. On the Scan tab, click Scan a Document or Photo to open HP Scan, and then continue to the next step.

Change settings in HP Scan before you complete a scan job.

  1. Scan Shortcuts

  2. Show Viewer After Scan check box

  3. Source options

  4. Scan settings

  5. More

  1. Select a Scan Shortcut, such as Save as PDF or Email as JPEG.

    NOTE:

To save or email a multi-page scan as a single file, select a PDF shortcut. Multi-page JPEG scans save as separate files.

  2. Select the Show Viewer After Scan check box.

  3. If your printer has both a document feeder and scanner glass, select Document Feeder if loaded under Source.

  4. Make sure the other settings such as Page Size, Color Mode, and Page Sides match your scan job.

    NOTE:

If you want to scan both sides and 2-sided scanning is not an option, you can add pages to your scan later.

  5. Click More to change advanced settings, such as Resolution (ppi), Orientation, Destination, and File Name.

Load your document, complete the scan, and then edit, if necessary.

  1. Load all pages into the document feeder. Look for a graphic with arrows on the document feeder to help you load your original pages correctly.

    NOTE:

To avoid paper jams and feed issues, make sure the original pages fit easily into the document feeder. You can add pages to your scan job later.

  2. In HP Scan, click Scan.

The printer scans each page in the document feeder, and then HP Scan displays a preview.

  3. Follow any prompts to flip and re-load the pages for duplex scanning.

  4. To add more pages to your scan, click the Add pages icon on the bottom bar, load more pages into the document feeder, and then click Scan.

  5. To remove pages from your scan, select a page, and then click the Delete page icon  on the bottom bar.

  6. To change the order of your multi-page scan, click and drag pages into the order you want.

  7. Double-click individual pages to rotate, crop, or change brightness and contrast, or click More for advanced options.

  8. When you finish editing your scan, click Save or Send.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
