New 3830, MAC OS 10.14.4 Mojave MacBook sees printer, asks for wpa2 password, enter network password, printer window comes back as invalid password. Rebooted printer numerous times, no luck. I can print out network config pages from printer panel. Any way to set up print direct and not go thru router ?

@maswindell, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
The WPA2 password refers to your Wireless network password. If you do not know or have forgotten the password, refer to this document to know how to retrieve it.
To connect the printer and the MAC directly without using a WiFi router, use WiFi-Direct.
-
Open the item you want to print if it is web-based content such as a web page, cloud-stored document, or an email. Using Wi-Fi Direct temporarily disconnects your computer from the internet.
-
Turn on the printer and make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.
-
Get the Wi-Fi Direct printer name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP Officejet Pro 6970) and password.
Printers with a control panel display: Open the Wi-Fi Direct menu or print a network configuration report to get the printer name and password.
-
Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon
or open the Wi-Fi Direct settings menu to get the name and password.
-
Go to the Reports menu, and then select Network Summary or Network config. to print a network summary page. The name and password is under the Wi-Fi Direct section.
-
-
On the computer, click the wireless icon
, select your Wi-Fi Direct printer name from the list of available networks, and then enter the password.
-
Open the item you want to print, click File, and then click Print.
-
Select your printer, and then click Print.
-
Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after the print job completes.

I am unable to put printer in direct mode. I have had issues with technicolor router setting which one tech helped me with but did not fix problem. Printing direct will be great to eliminate router. Direct icon shows up in wireless toolbar, on printer it shows password for direct, but still nothing works. Spectrum is no help case # 5034454261

When you see the Printer on the available wireless networks list on your MAC, click on it and connect to it by entering the Wifi Direct password.
Note: You will not have Internet access on the MAC while the MAC and the printer are connected using WiFi Direct.
Once connected, try to print a saved document from your MAC.
To check the connectivity, you can go to a web browser and in the address bar at the top, type in 192.168.223.1
If you see the EWS/Home page of the printer, it means the printer and the MAAC are connected via WiFI Direct.
The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.
You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera.
Keep me posted.

I see the direct connect printer but when I click on it nothing happens, any idea why? I think the router is causing all the problems. Any help will be appreciated. What is the distance direct connect works ?

Regarding the issue connecting with the wireless Router, please check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.
Also update the Printer Firmware. You can refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168
If the issue persists, Restore the Network Settings back to default
1. From the Home screen, touch (Wireless), and then touch Settings . 2. Touch Restore Network Settings. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Then try using WiFi-Direct once again as instructed above
Keep me posted 😊
