HP officejet 6500 wireless
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP officejet 6500 wireless, was setup as a wireless unit and worked well for over 4 years . currently on Windows 10 64bit for more than a year, worked seamlessly.

After ON, all buttons on the printer stop working.

I have tried all the usual reset like power reset, even tried reinstall driver.

Now the printer comes ON and stays ON. It shows as online and ready on 'HP solution Center'.

I tried to print  test page from PC , but stays on queue. Also no errors.

Is there a factory reset button on this printer?

Hi @pradeep76a,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand you are having printing issues on your HP OfficeJet printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

  • Did you make any changes to the printer before the issue started?
  • Is the printer able to make a copy?
  • Is the printer connected via USB or a network?
  • The exact printer product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

In the meantime, please try these steps here:

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then perform a Hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check for the latest firmware update for your printer, using this link.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

Please respond to this post with the details and with the troubleshooting results. I'll look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks Biswajeet,

I have answered in Green text.

  • Did you make any changes to the printer before the issue started? No
  • Is the printer able to make a copy? No the Panel and Buttons are frozen.
  • Is the printer connected via USB or a network? USB
  • The exact printer product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

 Printer Model:

HP Officejet 6500 E709n (Displayed on Solution Center)

HP Officejet 6500 E709Q (Label located inside the device, near the ink cartridges area.)

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector. Done

Remove all the ink cartridges and then perform a Hard reset on the printer. Done

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Done

Remove USB cable, if present. Done

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge. Done

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer. Done

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle. Done

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works. Done

This time: Test page printed ok.

I tried to print a word document and it stayed on the queue and the printer Froze again.

Tried to print test page again , but it stays on the queue.

Observation:

Once printer is ON and in idle state, there is only a window of 10 seconds before it freezes.

So after repeated tries, I was able to print “Printer Status Report’. The print was intermittent but complete.

The freeze is only on the Display and button panel. All buttons stop working after 10 seconds.

Display freezes with whatever was current at that point. Like Door open even if the door was closed.

As the USB is connected Solution Center on HP Solution Center still displays messages like “Cover Open”, “Cartridge Problem” , “Your HP Officejet 6500 E709n is ready”, and also Shows Estimated Ink Levels . with the Big Green Circle Tick. This message changes even if the Printer panel if frozen.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check for the latest firmware update for your printer, using this link. : Firmware is up to date – through HP Support Assistant- Last update 10/02/2017

Hi @pradeep76a,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand you have followed the steps suggested in the previous post and still having the same issue where the printer freezes after power on. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help to resolve this issue,

We can perform a reset in order to revert the changes.

Does BL/BL/BL/BL mean, bottom left as in "start scan" button 4 times? Does the "/" mean anything?

As mentioned before all buttons freeze up in about 10 seconds.

When I press BL BL BL BL I get "No scan options"  message and then it freezes up like always.
