My printer will only print on the matt side of photo paper (when I put the paper in the wrong way up ) when I put the glossy side down it only prints four strips along the photo paper. Printing on A4 works great! Please help!

Questions / Considerations...

  1. Is the Full Feature Software (full driver printer software) installed?  The full driver should be installed in addition to having installed the HP Smart Windows application.
  2. Is the photo paper a supported paper size and paper weight?
  3. Is the printer aware of the paper size / paper type loaded in the printer?
  4. If the paper is other than plain paper, is it loaded in Tray 2
  5. Did you select Tray 2 as opposed to leaving the tray selection as "Automatic"?

Note:  Answer should be Yes to all questions...

=========================================================================

1.  Full Driver printer software

Preparation

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Printer software not installed?

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

Hi, Thanks for the quick comprehensive reply, I tried all of your suggestions and had semi success! After tiying the things you suggested I tried another photo, it printed out a quater of the picture, the second time about two thirds! I notice when I printed out those pictures the file was a Jpeg. So I changed the original photo I was tring to print from PNG to Jpeg and got the same results ( partial prints) I then cleaned and aligmnned the heads and got the same result ,. after a restart ( i had restarted both pc and printer) it started to work normally ... for a few pictures, now it only seem to print properly when I right click print from the picture, when I use the HP smart app it will only print part the photo, so strange! Thanks agin, Ill keep woring on it, but for now ill have a beer!

@rustywelly

You are welcome.

It's just odd - printer should print photos...

I suspect I am missing something.

There is value in re-cleaning using the tools - there's a limit, of course, to what the tools can actually do.  I'd run the tools a couple of times, maybe three.

If you can do so, there might be benefit in opening up the printer to clean the insides.  I had to do this recently (for the first time) on my OfficeJet Pro 9025.

Unfortunately, most of the documents I can find now say something similar to "run the tools > reset the printer > give up and service printer".  That said, this document still shows how to open the printer and clean the inside.  The printers shown are similar in design and function to the 9020 printers...

HP ENVY 7640, OfficeJet 5740, 8040 Printers - 'Out of Paper' Displays and Printer Does Not Pick Pape...

Hint:

Heed the instructions in Solution Three to Switch OFF and Unplug.  That little top piece won't lift to open the printer unless the printer is unplugged (personal observation based on my having done it wrong the first time).

What else?

Cntrl-P uses the Printing Preferences as found - that is, the job uses the defaulted / selected Shortcut / settings

Open Printing Preferences - check which shortcut is being used as the "go to" (selected / default).

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click Printer > Printing Preferences

As a check, consider changing the default / preferred Shortcut to Photo Printing with white borders OR Photo Printing Borderless.  For example, select one of these shortcuts and click OK to save as the default.

Example

9025_Printing_Preferences_Photo_5x7_59025_Printing_Preferences_Photo_5x7_5

When Preferences are called / used from within other software, they might be called Printing Properties, Properties, More Settings, or other names.

I would guess you are already doing this when you set up the job in HP Smart...

It might be worth rechecking what is going on in HP Smart > Print Photos > Main Menu > ... More Settings

For example, it is important that the Shortcut and the Paper Type are selected correctly (and, of course, that the paper itself is a supported weight).
