Hi @evettebt,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You’re using an HP Officejet 5610 with Windows 11, and seeing a “cartridge error” message. This is usually caused by dirty contacts, misaligned cartridges, or cartridge chip issues.

Below are clear, accurate steps to fix it

Step 1: Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn ON the printer.
  2. With it still ON, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Unplug from the wall outlet, too.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the cord directly back into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  6. Reconnect to the printer and power it on.

Step 2: Remove and Clean Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the access door and wait for the cartridges to stop moving.
  2. Remove both cartridges (black and tri-color).
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Gently clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge.
  5. Also, clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer (look for tiny golden dots).
  6. Let all parts air-dry for 5 minutes.
  7. Reinstall the cartridges firmly and close the cover.

Step 3: Reset the Cartridges

  1. Remove both cartridges again.
  2. Reinsert only the black cartridge. Close the door.
    • If the error persists, remove the black and try only the color.
    • This helps identify if one cartridge is faulty.

Step 4: Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Third-party or refilled cartridges often cause chip recognition errors.
  • Make sure the cartridge has no tape over the contacts or vent holes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
