Microsoft Windows 11

My new M140W has a paper tray that is smaller in length than the paper I'm loading into it (standard 8.5 x 11). I'm afraid to tug on it too hard.  Any ideas?

Hi @lucib52,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the paper tray on your HP M140W printer is smaller than the paper you're trying to load, it can cause issues with feeding and paper alignment. Here are some steps you can take to address this problem:

1. Verify Paper Tray Adjustment

Check Paper Tray Size:

  • Ensure that the paper tray is set to the correct paper size. Most printers have adjustable paper guides that should be aligned with the size of the paper you're using.

Adjust Paper Guides:

  • Inside the tray, there should be adjustable paper guides. Make sure these guides are snug against the paper without being too tight. This helps keep the paper aligned and prevents jams.

2. Check Paper Placement

Align Paper Properly:

  • Ensure that the paper is stacked neatly and aligned correctly in the tray. The paper should be flat and not curled or bent.

Avoid Overloading the Tray:

  • Don’t overload the paper tray. Only load the tray with the number of sheets it can hold comfortably. Overloading can cause feeding issues.

3. Inspect Paper Tray for Obstructions

Check for Debris:

  • Look inside the paper tray and printer for any debris or obstructions that might be preventing the tray from closing properly or affecting paper feed.

Ensure Tray is Fully Inserted:

  • Make sure the paper tray is fully inserted into the printer. Sometimes, if the tray isn’t seated properly, it can cause issues with paper feed.

4. Verify Printer Settings

Check Printer Settings:

  • On your computer or printer settings, ensure that the paper size is set correctly. Sometimes, incorrect settings can cause issues with how the printer handles paper.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Manufacturers sometimes release updates to fix bugs or improve performance. Check the HP website for any available updates for your M140W.

5. Consult the Manual

  1. Refer to the User Manual:
    • The user manual for the HP M140W will have specific instructions on how to load paper and adjust the paper tray. If you don’t have a physical copy, you can usually download a PDF version from the HP website

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
