I've the same problem with a HP Officejet pro 8720, while I didn't have this problem with my previous old HP photosmart printer. I've followed the recommendations like inserting the picture via the insert option in Word, but it still prints much too large, it looks like it is keeping the original image size, even though the print preview shows the correct size. Saving as PDF works, but it is extra trouble which shouldn't be necessary, as it is a problem occuring with this HP printer only. Other brand printers at work don't show this problem. Not sure what to do next?

@WSchijve

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

I've followed all the steps mentioned in the post above, and reinstalled the printer software and drivers, but the issue is still there. Nothing solved unfortunately. Any other suggestions?

Try using the built-in drivers: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879

Also this method doesn't help.

Let's create a local account and try there: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-acc...

I've looked around on microsoft help forums, and its full of problems with Word documents printing too large pictures on HP printers. Most solutions suggested there are installing new drivers, which didn't work for me.
I've found one solution that at least is some kind of work-around that keeps the right size during printing. it is the solution suggested by Joker180 on this site: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-word/cropped-images-when-printing-in-a-...
Putting a box frame around the picture. I also noticed that that will throw away any cropped image information, so it is not a desired final solution, and it is also weird that this is only needed for HP printers. But for the moment it saves wasting large amounts of ink.
By the way, I'm on windows 10 and the Word version is 2010, so newer than in that post.  I'm still waiting for a real solution.

Did you create a local account and try installing the drivers on that, checking if it happens there?
