Hi @scumbug,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Issues with the printhead in an HP Officejet Pro 8630 printer can be frustrating, but they are not uncommon. Printhead problems can manifest in various ways, including poor print quality, streaks, missing colors, or error messages. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve printhead issues.

Check for Error Messages: If your printer displays an error message related to the printhead, note down the error code. This code can help you diagnose the specific issue.

Printhead Cleaning:

  • Most HP printers have an option for printhead cleaning in the settings menu. Use this option to clean the printhead. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • You may need to perform multiple cleaning cycles for better results.

Manual Cleaning:

  • If automated cleaning doesn't work, you can manually clean the printhead. To do this, remove the printhead from the printer (refer to your printer's manual for instructions).
  • Gently wipe the printhead with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Be careful not to touch the nozzles with your fingers.
  • Let the printhead dry thoroughly before reinserting it.

Replace Ink Cartridges: Sometimes, the issue may not be with the printhead itself but with the ink cartridges. Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Replace any empty or old cartridges.

Firmware Update: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues that lead to printhead problems.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer's internal components.

Printhead Replacement:

  • If cleaning and other troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the printhead. You can order a new printhead from HP or an authorized retailer.
  • Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the new printhead.

Remember to always handle the printhead and other printer components carefully to avoid causing any additional damage. Printhead issues can sometimes be a sign of a more significant problem, so it's essential to address them promptly to maintain the printer's functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
