Hi @JohnBJr1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

When your HP OfficeJet 8600 displays a message saying "printer needs attention" and refuses to print, it could be due to various issues such as a paper jam, low ink levels, connectivity issues, or a firmware problem. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check for Error Messages

  • Printer Display: Look for any specific error messages on the printer's display screen. These messages can provide clues about the issue.

2. Check for Paper Jams

  1. Turn off the Printer: Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  2. Open All Doors: Check the input and output trays, and the rear access door, if applicable.
  3. Remove Any Jammed Paper: Carefully remove any jammed paper or debris.
  4. Reconnect and Restart: Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

3. Check Ink or Toner Levels

  1. Ink Levels: Ensure that the ink cartridges have sufficient ink. If they are low or empty, replace them with new cartridges.
  2. Reinstall Cartridges: Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.

4. Check Printer Connectivity

  1. Wi-Fi Connection: Ensure that the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network. Restart your router if necessary.
  2. USB Connection: If you are using a USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer.

Kindly check the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @JohnBJr1,

Please find the next steps below.

5. Update Firmware and Drivers

  1. Firmware Update: Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
  2. Download and Install Updates: Download and install any available firmware updates for your printer.
  3. Driver Update: Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can also download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.

6. Reset the Printer

  1. Hard Reset: Perform a hard reset of the printer to clear any potential software issues:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.

7. Print a Test Page

  1. Print Test Page: Try printing a test page from the printer’s control panel to check if the issue is resolved.
    • Go to Setup > Reports > Printer Status Report.

8. Check Printer Settings

  1. Printer Queue: Ensure there are no stuck print jobs in the printer queue:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and select See what's printing.
    • Cancel any pending or stuck print jobs.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet 8600 printer.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware fault. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
