I bought some ink cartridges (which were not original) but then realized that they would not work so I purchased original HP ink cartridges.  After installing the original cartridges, I got a "printer failure" message.  I tried to reset and clean the ink cartridge pinheads but this also did not work.  I went thru the steps to  do a hard reset but this not only failed the printer is still reading "printer failure" I am now getting a message "initializing mode" with the inability to turn off the printer without a hard shut down.  Please help!!!

Hi @gvhrg

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 printer. The "printer failure" and "initializing mode" errors can be tricky, but here are some steps to help resolve the problem:

Step 1: Perform a Semi-Full Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door and remove all cartridges.
  3. Close the door and press the Home button on the screen.
  4. Tap the area where the Back button would be four times to access the hidden support menu.
  5. Scroll down to the Reset Menu and select Semi-Full Reset.
  6. Wait for the printer to shut down, then turn it back on and follow the on-screen setup instructions.

Step 2: Clean the Printhead

  1. Remove the printhead from the printer:
    • Open the ink cartridge access door and lift the latch handle.
    • Carefully remove the printhead.
  2. Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  3. Reinstall the printhead and ensure it is seated properly.

Step 3: Update Printer Firmware

  1. Visit the Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support for your printer model.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update.
  3. Restart the printer after the update.

Step 4: Check for Hardware Issues

  1. Run HP Diagnostics:
    • Turn off the printer and press Esc repeatedly during startup.
    • Select System Diagnostics and run the tests.
  2. If diagnostics indicate a hardware issue, contact HP Support for further assistance.
