Hi @BySweetie,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Laptop Envy 17 is not communicating with your HP OfficeJet 3830 printer, here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue.
Check the Connection
- WiFi Connection: Ensure that both the printer and the laptop are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- USB Connection: If you are using a USB cable, ensure it is properly plugged in on both the laptop and the printer.
Restart Devices
- Power off both the laptop and the printer.
- Turn on the printer first and then the laptop to ensure they both start fresh.
Check Printer Status
- On the Printer: Make sure the printer is powered on, has paper in the tray, and is not showing any error messages or blinking lights.
- On the Laptop: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and check if the printer is listed and set as the default.
Update Drivers
- Open Device Manager on your laptop and check if there are any issues listed under "Printers."
- You may need to update or reinstall the printer drivers. Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet 3830.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- HP offers a free tool to diagnose and resolve printer issues. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP's official website and follow the instructions.
Check Firewall/Security Settings
- Sometimes, security software or firewalls can block the connection. Temporarily disable any firewalls or antivirus programs and check if the printer communicates with the laptop.
Set Printer as Default
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and select the HP OfficeJet 3830 printer as your default printer.
Reinstall Printer
- If none of the above works, uninstall the printer from your laptop, restart the laptop, and then reinstall the printer using the Add Printer option in Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
