Hi @ROGROCKER,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer refuses to print black even though the black ink level is full. Let’s walk through the troubleshooting steps to help restore your printer’s black output.
Recommended Steps – Black Ink Not Printing
This issue can occur due to clogged printheads, dry ink, or software miscommunication. Here’s how to resolve it:
1. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle
This is the most effective first step.
- On the printer control panel or via the HP Smart app:
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
- Run the cleaning process up to three times if needed.
This helps remove dried ink or air bubbles that may be blocking the black nozzle.
2. Print a Diagnostic Page
This helps identify which colors are affected.
- Go to Settings > Reports > Print Quality Report.
- Check if the black section is missing, faded, or streaked.
If black is absent, the issue is likely with the printhead or ink flow.
3. Check Ink Cartridge or Tank
- Ensure the black cartridge is a genuine HP and properly seated.
- If using an ink tank system, confirm the ink level is above the minimum line and the cap is tightly closed.
4. Update Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause ink detection issues.
- Visit Official HP® Support and enter your printer model.
- Download and install the latest firmware update.
5. Replace the Printhead (if needed)
If cleaning doesn’t help and the black ink still won’t print, the printhead may be clogged or damaged.
- Check your printer’s warranty status.
- Visit HP Parts Store to order a replacement if needed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
