Can I use the scanner when printhead not working? Error message says " printhead missing, not detected or incorrectly installed". Have tried the various steps recommended - got me nowhere. Why do I need a printhead to scan to a PC? How can I use the scanner despite this error message?

You may try but it might not work as the hardware of the printer could be bad.

When the printer is in error state especially with the hardware, you wouldn't be able to perform any functionalities.
You can try the HP Smart App on your Computer: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142
