Get paper jam tray 1 and 2, messing around for 2 hrs, works, but only prints 1 sheet then paper jam tray 2.  Open tray, no jam, paper tray is not being raised

The tray on this model is raised by spring. When you insert the tray, a tab on the bottom of the tray released the locks and allows the tray to raise. When you pull the tray out, the tray is pushed down and locks. If the tray is not rising then you probably have a broken tray.

Wow, thank you for responding so quickly!   I don't see how that would cause tray 1 to fail with the same error message e.g. Tray 1 paper jam or tray 2 paper jam.  My printer is completely useless to me now, this just happened suddenly.   If I manually raise tray 2 by some trickery, it works great - I just think that tray is not being released by that little catch on the bottom.  I've not used tray 1 in years.  Any more Ideas?

Forgot to ask you, What pushes that little catch on the bottom?  I don't see anything except a slightly raised rail, I think that is missing the catch.

I am nowhere near one of these units until next week but can post some pictures of the latching mechanism then.

Make sure that the paper level indicator on the front of tray is not restricting the tray movement.  Describe the tray two jam?  Where does the paper stop?  See if you can shine a flashlight from the rear of printer and watch the tray 2 paper feed.  Remove the cassette tray and print from tray 1.  Does tray 1 jam with cassette removed?

FLASH!  WIFE JUST DISCOVERED THAT WHEN SHE "FLIPS' THE SHEET INDICATOR, THEN PRESSES GO, IT PRINTS!  IS THERE AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH ON THAT THAT IS FAILING?  iF SO, WHERE DO i GET REPLACEMENT PARTS???

HP Recommended

This tech was very helpful, my whole problem was simply a dirty/old paper pickup roller.  Cleaning this roller fixed all my problems. I have requested where I can buy a new one.

Check the HP Parts Store or Ebay. As your initial description was tray not lifting I did not think to recommend cleaning the roller. Good to hear it is all sorted out.

That was all my fault for leading you down the rabbit hole, I realized when my wife started playing around with the paper indicator, that she was actually bringing the paper closer to the roller, possibly even compressing it slightly.  I did find the replacement rollers at Amazon, and so ordered 2 for spares.  This little printer has been a workhorse, I am lost without it.

If I ever have problems again on any of my other HP products (PC, Laptop, HP Oscilloscope, heck, I even have an HP-25C pocket calculator I bought when they first came out !)  HP has always made some of the best products.
