My printer suddenly will not print when I send a job from my computer. It prints test pages. It keeps prompting me to load paper into Tray 1, but the only tray on the printer is labeled "2."

Hi @PShepherd,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw is having trouble recognizing the paper tray correctly. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Check Tray Configuration:
- Ensure that Tray 2 is properly installed and correctly configured in the printer settings. Sometimes, a misconfiguration can cause the printer to request paper from a non-existent tray.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve issues related to tray recognition. You can find updates on HP’s official website.
Printer Settings:
- Access the printer’s control panel or web interface and review the settings for paper trays. Ensure that Tray 2 is set as the default tray and that it is properly recognized by the printer.
Reset Printer:
- Try performing a reset on your printer. This can sometimes resolve issues related to tray detection. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.
Check Paper Tray:
- Make sure that Tray 2 is correctly loaded with paper and that the paper is properly aligned. If the tray is not correctly seated or the paper is jammed, the printer might have trouble recognizing it.
Printer Driver:
- Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. Sometimes, updating or reinstalling the driver can fix communication issues between your computer and printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
