Short history on changing my printer cartridge - 1) I could not print in black without changing a spent Cyan cartridge. 2) I put in another one that was at home, not knowing if it was truly empty. It was, so...still no printing at all. 3) I misread the label at the office supply store, and bought a cartridge that's the next number up, got home, and tried to install it. 4) It did not fit, and could not be activated,  so I returned the cartridge, and found a store that had my number and color in stock, so I bought that and installed it. 5) I heard the printer make activating noises,  6) when the noises stopped, I had a "Printer Failure" message on the screen. 7) I tried taking the cartridge out and putting it back in, but nothing changed. 7) Twice I took the advice on the screen, and turned off the printer, then turned it back on again, but I still have the same printer failure message. saying contact HP. So  Here we are.

Hi @be_sweet,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’ve been through quite a process with your printer! A "Printer Failure" message after changing cartridges can be frustrating, but here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on. This can reset the printer’s internal system.

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure the new cartridge is properly installed. Remove it and reseat it, ensuring that it clicks into place securely.
  • Double-check that the cartridge is the correct model for your printer. Sometimes, even if it fits, it might not be compatible.

Inspect for Packaging Material:

  • Ensure that any protective tape or packaging has been removed from the cartridge before installation. Sometimes, this can prevent proper contact.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth. This can help ensure good contact between the cartridge and the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • If possible, check the HP Support website for any firmware updates for your printer model. Sometimes, updates can resolve compatibility issues.

Run Printer Diagnostic Tools:

  • If your printer has a built-in diagnostics option, use it to see if it can identify the issue. Alternatively, you can download the HP Print and Scan Doctor to help diagnose and fix issues.

Reset Printer Settings:

  • Some printers have an option to reset to factory settings. Check the user manual or HP's support site for instructions on how to do this.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
