I cannot print, a simple pdf, from any app I try to print from.
I am getting the 'printer in use error'.
Printer dialogue it says 'waiting for scanner'
I am not scanning anything
Printer error log says 'E [07/Jul/2023:15:59:30 -0400] [Job 166] Job held (then my name)
There are no scans or prints in a que.
I scanned a new document from HP Smart, it worked fine.
Uninstalled other scan apps
Cleared the printer
Unplugged the printer
I have reset the printer
Restarted my Mac
Checked activity monitor for any scanning processes running.
I'm using MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
Monterey 12.2.1
I cannot work! Can anybody Help?
Thanks, Natalie

Hi @natalie3733,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "printer in use" indicates that there is another print job currently in progress or the printer is not available for printing at the moment. The log entry "Job held" suggests that the print job with ID 166 is currently on hold and not being processed.
To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps.
- Check for any physical obstructions: Make sure there are no paper jams, the ink cartridges are properly installed, and there are no other physical issues that could prevent the printer from functioning correctly.
- Cancel the held print job: If the log shows that a specific print job is being held, you can try canceling that job and see if it resolves the issue. On your computer, go to the print queue or printer settings and look for the option to cancel or delete the print job with ID 166. Once canceled, try printing a new document to see if it works.
- Restart the printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. Power on the printer and check if the error persists. Restarting the printer can often clear temporary glitches and help resolve the issue.
- Restart your computer: If the problem persists, try restarting your computer. Sometimes, issues with the print spooler or the printer driver can cause errors. Restarting your computer can refresh these components and potentially resolve the problem.
- Update printer drivers: Outdated or incompatible printer drivers can cause various issues. Visit the manufacturer's website for your printer model and download the latest drivers available. Install the updated drivers on your computer and check if it resolves the problem.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
