My HP Smart Tank 6001 keeps displaying black printer icon. Ink is full and I have printed before. I remove the head, reinstall it, unplug the unit and reboot it after 60 seconds. Nothing works.

Hi @John14011066,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the issue. The black printer icon on your HP Smart Tank 6001 typically indicates a printhead-related error, especially with the black printhead. Even if the ink is full, the printer may not recognize or properly engage the printhead.

Steps to Fix the Black Icon Error on HP Smart Tank 6001

1. Check the Black Printhead Installation

  • Open the front door and then the printhead access door.
  • Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Ensure the printhead latch is fully closed.
  • Remove the black printhead and inspect:
    • Protective tape on the contacts must be removed.
    • Plugs on top of the printhead must be removed.
    • Contacts and nozzles must not be touched.

2. Reinstall the Printhead Properly

  • Slide the printhead in at a slight upward angle.
  • Push up until it snaps into place.
  • Close the latch firmly.
  • Close all doors and restart the printer.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Turn on the printer.

4. Align the Printheads

  • If prompted, print the Alignment Page.
  • Follow the instructions on the page to complete alignment.

5. Factory Reset (if needed)

If the issue persists:

  • On the control panel, press and hold the Information button for 5 seconds until all buttons light up.
  • Then press and hold the Cancel + Wireless buttons together for 5 seconds.
  • This will reset the printer to factory defaults.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
