HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw

My hp color laser mfp 179fnw printer keeps showing the message "Scan Unit Open or Exit Jam" and "Install toner" after having removed a whole stuck paper and after I have replaced the black toner with a HP original toner unit.

I do not know what to do with it.

I bought the printer through Amazon from a seller less than two years ago. Can I use the warranty for something?

Any suggestions?

PD: What does the message "Scan Unit Open or Exit Jam" exactly mean?

Hi @BernatUser,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error messages you're encountering on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw printer can be frustrating, but there are steps you can take to try to resolve these issues. Here's what you can do.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open all doors and trays of the printer and carefully inspect for any paper jams. Even a small piece of paper can trigger the "Scan Unit Open or Exit Jam" message. If you find any paper, gently remove it.

Check the Toner Cartridge:

  • Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed. Open the toner access door and remove and reseat the toner cartridge to ensure it's securely in place.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear error messages.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve hardware-related issues.

Inspect the Scan Unit:

  • Open the scanner lid and check if there's anything obstructing the scan unit's movement. It's possible that a foreign object or debris is preventing it from functioning correctly.

Clean the Scanner Glass:

  • Sometimes, smudges or dirt on the scanner glass can cause scanning issues. Clean the glass carefully with a soft, lint-free cloth and glass cleaner.

Check Sensors and Connections:

  • Inspect the sensors and connectors inside the printer to ensure they are clean and securely connected.

Replace Toner Cartridge:

  • If the "Install toner" message persists, it might indicate that the toner cartridge is empty or faulty. Try replacing it with a new and genuine HP toner cartridge.

Always follow the HP instructions and safety precautions when working with printers and their components. Additionally, make sure you are using genuine HP toner cartridges and not third-party or refilled cartridges, as they can sometimes cause compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
