Hi @bed159,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP Smart Tank 5100 All-in-One printer keeps turning itself off, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

1. Check Power Settings

  • Energy Saving Mode: The printer might be set to enter sleep mode or turn off after a certain period of inactivity.
    • Go to the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings or Setup, and check the Energy Saving settings. Adjust the sleep mode or auto-off settings to a longer period or disable them if possible.

2. Ensure Stable Power Supply

  • Power Connection: Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into the printer and the power outlet.
  • Power Source: Avoid using power strips or surge protectors. Connect the printer directly to a wall outlet to rule out power supply issues.

3. Firmware Update

  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve printer performance.
    • Download the latest firmware from the HP Support website.
    • Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Reset Printer: A reset can often fix many issues.
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Wait for 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Turn on the printer.

Find the next steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @bed159,

Please find the next steps below.

5. Check for Overheating

  • Ventilation: Ensure the printer is placed in a well-ventilated area. Overheating can cause the printer to shut down.
  • Dust and Debris: Clean any dust or debris around the printer vents to improve airflow.

6. Factory Reset

  • Factory Reset: If the issue persists, consider performing a factory reset.
    • Navigate to Settings or Setup on the printer’s control panel.
    • Find the Restore Factory Defaults or similar option.
    • Confirm the reset and follow any on-screen instructions.

7. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Inspect Hardware: Look for any visible signs of damage to the power cord or the printer itself. If any hardware components are damaged, they may need to be replaced.
  • Contact Support: If the printer is still under warranty, consider contacting HP support for a hardware inspection or replacement.

8. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Printer Software: Ensure that the printer software and drivers installed on your computer are up to date. Outdated software can cause connectivity and power issues.

9. Disable Auto-Off Feature

  • Auto-Off: Some HP printers have an auto-off feature that turns the printer off after a period of inactivity.
    • Navigate to Settings on the printer’s control panel.
    • Find the Auto-Off setting and disable it.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue with your HP Smart Tank 5100 All-in-One printer turning itself off. If the problem persists, it may be a sign of a more serious hardware issue, and contacting HP phone support would be advisable.
