I've had this printer for years and almost always used "knockoff" ink cartridges which worked fine. Suddenly the printer won't print, it's blaming the tri-color cartridge but there' nothing wrong with it or different about it compared to previous ones. Is there a workaround or a way to make the printer recognize this cartridge?

What exactly is the error message?  What would make you think "there is nothing wrong with it"?* The printer will do an electrical check at various times (e.g., when a new cartridge is installed, at power-on, before printing) and will signal an error if there are issues.  The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the cartridge error.

* Third-party cartridges are typically HP cartridges that have been used, then returned for recycling and refilled (perhaps multiple times).  The process is prone to various mechanical damage to the electronics due to rough handling along the way (consider dropping the cartridge in a recycle box, that box poured into another for shipment, etc.).  See the document here for a study of the reliability of third-party cartridges.  If cleaning the electrical contacts of the cartridge and printer as described in the document above does not resolve the issue I would suggest contacting your supplier for a replacement cartridge.

Thanks Bob. Tried the steps in the troubleshooting document, didn't help. Your info however did teach me a few things, including the fact that a cartridge can be defective or damaged even if it looks OK... and from that study I learned that 37% of knockoff cartridges fail. Didn't know that. In the past when a cartridge didn't work I'd ask vendor for a new one, which I will do this time as well. I hope that works. Thanks again for your help.
