I got a new laptop Windows 11 - which now does not work with my HP 5200 printer. I get error code 0xb8cf72fe.
Then the printer "freezes" and I cannot get back to the menu or do anything else.
Suggestions?
Thank you.

Hi @TerryMcE,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error code 0xb8cf72fe on your HP 5200 printer suggests there might be a serious issue, possibly related to firmware or hardware. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Perform a Power Cycle
Turn Off the Printer:
- Power Down: Turn off the printer using the power button.
Unplug the Printer:
- Disconnect: Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
Wait:
- Wait: Leave the printer unplugged for at least 60 seconds to allow any residual power to dissipate.
Reconnect and Power On:
- Plug In: Reconnect the power cord and plug it back into the wall outlet.
- Turn On: Turn the printer back on and see if the issue is resolved.
2. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
Download Drivers:
- HP Support: Visit the HP Support website and search for your HP 5200 printer model.
- Download: Download the latest drivers compatible with Windows 11.
Install Drivers:
- Run Installer: Install the downloaded drivers by following the on-screen instructions.
Check for Updates:
- Windows Update: Ensure Windows 11 is fully updated by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
- Firmware Update:
- HP Support: Visit the HP Support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP 5200 printer.
- Download and Install: Follow the instructions provided to update the printer’s firmware.
4. Reset Printer to Factory Defaults
Access Printer Menu:
- Navigate to Settings: If possible, access the printer’s menu through the control panel.
Factory Reset:
- Find Reset Option: Look for an option to restore the printer to factory settings. This is often found under Setup or Maintenance.
Confirm Reset:
- Follow Prompts: Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to restart.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
