About a month ago, I bought new Laser Jet cartridges 202x from Office Depot. I noticed that the usual strip that needed to be pulled before installation was not there and after installing all four new cartridges printing would stop and I got a message on the printer that the cartridge chip was non HP. The boxes were all typical HP, sealed…I returned to Office Depot and got zero help and out of frustration bought four more new cartridges- same experience, unopened HP boxes, cartridges in sealed plastic container, but not the old typical pull strip and then when installed I get “Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip”

Hi @Jiminaustin,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're encountering an issue with non-genuine or incompatible cartridges in your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw printer. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
- Ensure Authenticity: Make sure that you have purchased genuine HP cartridges. Counterfeit or third-party cartridges may not be recognized by the printer.
- Reinstall Cartridges: Try reinstalling the cartridges. Make sure they are securely and correctly placed. Turn off the printer, remove the cartridges, turn it back on, and then reinstall the cartridges.
- Check for Protective Strips: Although you mentioned the absence of the usual strip, double-check to ensure there are no protective strips or tapes left on the cartridges. These strips can sometimes be hard to notice.
- Update Firmware: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, firmware updates include improvements in cartridge recognition and compatibility.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Carefully remove the cartridges and clean the contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth. Make sure they are dry before reinstalling.
- Return/Exchange Cartridges: Since you've purchased the cartridges from Office Depot, you may want to return or exchange them again. If the issue persists with multiple sets of cartridges, it could be an issue with the printer itself.
Remember, using non-HP cartridges or those with non-genuine chips can lead to compatibility issues and may not be recognized by the printer. Always use genuine HP cartridges to ensure optimal performance and avoid potential problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
