HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer

Printer is stuck in update mode full bar with one status dot filled in. Nothing helps, unplugging it letting it stay unplugged for a while and as soon as it turns on it goes right back to that same status. I'm hoping this isn't a brick cause I will not buy another HP printer.

Hi @CDParker, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP ENVY Photo 7858 is stuck in firmware update mode, which can be tricky to fix. Since unplugging and restarting haven’t helped, try the following solutions:

Force a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer by unplugging it.
  2. Disconnect all cables (USB, Ethernet) except the power cord.
  3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds while the printer is unplugged.
  4. Plug it back in and try turning it on.

Enter Recovery Mode & Reinstall Firmware

  1. Unplug the printer.
  2. Hold the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons (or Wi-Fi + Back button) together.
  3. While holding the buttons, plug in the power cord and keep holding for 10 seconds.
  4. If the printer enters recovery mode, connect it to a computer and try reinstalling the firmware:
    • Download the latest firmware from HP’s website and install it via USB.

Try a Different Power Source

  • Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip.
  • Some firmware loops are caused by unstable power.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
