Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

When I try to print an envelope from Windows 10 microsoft word to HP 7740 printer it keeps telling me that I have the wrong paper size. I have #10 envelope selected both in my Word envelope selection menu and I changed it on the printer's paper tray 1 selection to #10 envelope. It appears to be saying that tray 1 is 8.5 x 11 size. I cant figure out why. On all the HP printers I have used, the last being a 8630, I never has to try to change the paper size selection on the printer to print an envelope.

It has been my experience...

Load the paper into the printer according to the  User Guide

Pay attention to the Feed options (flap position and rotation).

Tell the printer what is going on with the paper...

Check Adjust the paper size and type in EWS > Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper management.

For example,

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

EWS - HP Smart – Windows

Start HP Smart Application

Printer Settings

In section Settings > Advanced

Tab Settings > Preferences

What else?

The Printing Preferences are not directly involved in printing envelopes from Word > Mailing > Envelopes

That said, do have your Printing Preferences set to something "benign", for example, "Everyday Printing" (as opposed, for example, to a custom booklet shortcut)

Set the Preferences – Windows

This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.

Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver and / or might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" (or similar) from within printing software / applications.

Preferences and Envelopes:

Select / leave Printing Preferences shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Everything perfect - Envelope won't cooperate...

On occasion, I've seen an instance where "everything" is set up as required, including size and the all important FEED settings - in spite of the seemingly perfect setup, a simple #10 envelope won't print OR it prints incorrectly.

Workaround:  Treat the stubborn #10 envelope as if it is a "custom size".

Example

Pay attention to FEED options - adjust if necessary.
