HP 7740.
it prints most of the page faded, then depending on the document, picks out one part to be sharp. I tried from Adobe and from Excel, same no matter what i print. I installed a new print cartridge, but not sure if that was after the problem, or as a result to try to fix the problem and noted today that there is some goopy ink on the end. But still, it is printing weird, not like it's not printing at all and color does not seem to print at all. i hate to buy a new cartridge as these are like $80 or something like that only to find out it's the printer. Just started doing it, so wondering if it's a setting?

Thank you for reaching out, i really appreciate it. i did everything you recommended except by the part that holds the ink. I even bought all new ink. I will buy a new printer before i spend half of that on a part that may not fix it,, but gereat to have all of the options. Personally, i think it's the new firmware update. the printer worked fine until the firmware update.
can you tell me how to roll back the firmware so i can at least explore that option? it's a great printer that i don't print a lot on, so it's in great shape and would prefer to use it a little longer so that i can get my money's worth, if possible.
Thank you,
Greg

Hi @Greg8130
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
I understand your hesitation to spend more money on parts without being sure it'll fix the problem, and it's worth exploring the firmware rollback option.
Here’s how you can roll back the firmware on your HP printer:
How to Roll Back Firmware on an HP Printer
- Check if the Firmware Rollback is Supported:
- HP does not officially support downgrading firmware on all models. Check if your printer model allows a rollback. If it does, you can usually find previous versions of the firmware on HP’s website.
- Download Older Firmware (If Available):
- Visit the HP Support Website and search for your printer model.
- Look for the firmware section and see if there are older versions available to download.
- Temporarily Disable Firmware Updates:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance.
- Select Update the Printer > Printer Update Options and turn off automatic updates. This will prevent future updates from automatically being installed.
- Install the Older Firmware:
- Connect the printer to your computer via USB (recommended for stable communication during the process).
- Run the firmware downgrade installer you downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to install it on your printer.
- Restart the printer after the process is completed.
- Verify the Firmware Version:
- After the printer restarts, check the firmware version through the printer’s settings to ensure that it has successfully rolled back to the previous version.
If Downgrade Isn’t Allowed:
If your printer doesn't allow a firmware rollback (common with many newer HP models), you may need to explore some additional steps:
- Hard Reset:
- Unplug the printer from power.
- Wait 60 seconds, then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds while it's unplugged.
- Reconnect to power and turn the printer back on.
- Reset to Factory Settings:
- Go to Settings on the printer’s control panel.
- Select Restore Factory Settings or Restore Defaults. This can sometimes clear any glitches introduced by firmware updates.
- HP’s Printer Assistant or Firmware Recovery Tool:
- Try using HP’s Printer Assistant or the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to troubleshoot further, which may give you advanced options for fixing firmware-related issues.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
