The alignment process is not related to the trays. It is the printhead that aligns itself.

If the printer prints fine using tray 1, then yes the issue is with tray 2. Make sure the paper width guides are properly set.

To know how to work with the trays, refer to page 13 of the user guide.

If the issue persists, it could be a hardware issue with tray 2. Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options.

@Gary98198, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand the printer is not centered. Have you tried printing a different type of document and check if the issue persists?

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your PC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Check if the paper is loaded properly- Loading Paper, Cards, Envelopes

Check the print settings, refer to - HP print settings guide (Windows, Mac)

Make sure the correct paper type and size are selected.

Align the printhead

Aligning the printhead can resolve errors with Test Pattern 1.

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  3. Touch Align Printhead, and then touch Continue.

    An alignment page prints.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have tried all of your solutions. I moved the 11x17 paper to the upper tray and it printed fine.  I put 8.5x11 in the bottom tray and it printed "not centered", so the issue is with the bottom tray.  I took the tray out and studied it.  I was then able to take the tray apart and adjust the side to side fences.  It's much better now but still not perfect.  Thank you for your advise.  I'm good for now.

I have a question, I wasn't able to run the "align printhead" function on tray 2.  Am I missing something?
