I didn't use my printer for almost a year and now it seems the side tank is dry for most of the colors except one which look very full and watery. I can't insert more ink into any of them. It doesn't go down into the reservoir.

@kkenner, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Let us try these steps:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Try cleaning the printhead as mentioned in step 7 of this document. You may refer to Refilling Ink Tanks to know how to refill ink.
If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Thanks for these suggestions. I have tried them. The problem seems to be that because of lack of use over the course of many months, the ink has dried up not only in the tank but in the tubes that go to the print cartridges. And HP Support informed me that only a specialist could take the printer apart and clean this up. I think it should be known more widely that for infrequent users of printers, buying an Ink Tank is not recommendable. If I had bought disposable cartridges, my 2 year old printer would still be functioning. My mistake!

I understand your concern. Any type of printer, be it an ink tank printer or the printer that uses disposable ink cartridges, if not used for a couple of months, the ink will eventually dry up. It is recommended to use the printer once in a while to avoid the same.
