HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer

Good evening.  I may have adjusted my Microsoft Word settings to incorrect defaults, but I'm not sure what's going on.  The error I get on my H.P. 7855 printer window says, "load photo paper, 5x7 in. paper in the tray."  But, I'm not trying to print in 5x7.  I am trying to print in 4x6.  I loaded 4x6 index cards into the photo tray.  The Microsoft Word document I'm trying to print is set to 4x6 landscape.  And, the printer properties in Word all say 4x6.  So, I am a bit boggled at the error.  As I said, I may have altered a setting.  I think I actually had this happen a few years ago, but I don't remember how I overcame the problem, except that maybe one set of defaults or settings were somehow incompatible with another set of defaults or settings.  Maybe someone would be nice enough to help me resolve this problem.  How can I help someone to help me?  What information can I provide to help me uncover this problem I'm having?  I would be grateful for the assistance.  Thanks.

Hi @arthurblenheim

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with your HP 7855 printer regarding paper size settings. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Check Printer Settings

Open Printer Preferences:

  • In Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click on your HP 7855 and select Printer Preferences.
  • In macOS, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Options & Supplies.

Paper Size:

  • Ensure that the paper size is set to 4x6 in the printer preferences.

Paper Type:

  • Make sure the paper type is set correctly (for example, “Photo Paper” if you are using photo paper).

2. Check Document Settings in Word

Page Setup:

  • In Word, go to Layout > Size and ensure that 4x6 is selected.
  • Also, check the orientation (Landscape) and margins.

Print Settings:

  • When you go to print (File > Print), ensure that the correct paper size is selected in the print dialog box.

3. Load the Correct Paper

  • Ensure that you have the 4x6 index cards properly loaded in the photo tray. Make sure they are aligned correctly and that the tray is closed properly.

4. Change the Default Paper Size

  • Sometimes, a mismatch in settings can lead to errors:
    1. Open Printer Preferences as mentioned above.
    2. Change the default paper size to 4x6.
    3. Save the changes.

5. Reset Printer Settings

  • Reset the Printer:
    • Turn off the printer, unplug it for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.

6. Check for Updates

  • Make sure that both your printer’s firmware and your Microsoft Word software are up to date. Check the HP website for any printer firmware updates.

7. Try Printing from Another Application

  • To see if the issue is specific to Word, try printing a 4x6 document from another application, like Preview or Paint, to see if it works.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I am using Windows 11 o.s.  I used Windows system restore function, and, now, the printer is mistaking something else. In Office 365, M.S. Word doesn't allow me to print on both sides of letter-sized paper, despite that the H.P. 7855 is a double-sided printer. Let me explain what happens. In Word's sub-menu of Printer Properties, which I can find within Word's print menu--meaning when I try to print a document--Word defaults to "Photo Printing-with White Borders," even though I'm not trying to print photos, but a double-sided document instead. So, I change that setting to "Two-Sided (Duplex) Printing" where it then says "borderless" and "flip on long edge." However, when I close that dialogue box, Word says "Print One Sided." But, this is not how I want to print. I want double-sided printing. However, when I try to change the selection by clicking on that drop-down menu, the only thing else appearing in that menu is "Print One Sided" and "Manually Print on Both Sides." Two-sided printing is not in the drop-down list. It has vanished. How would I fix this? Again, thank you.
