The scan function on this printer has worked for years, but now when running HP Smart I get "Scanning is Currently Not Available" error message.  I recently added eero mesh wifi, otherwise no changes.  Printing works fine, but cartridge authentication does not.  I installed and ran HP print and scan doctor - no joy.  Advice?

Alas, tried all steps above - very clear instructions, thank you, but - no joy.  Yes, I am able to copy.

Still get the error message in the subject line of this thread when attempting to scan.

One thing I noticed when re-installing the software, toward the end of that process when product registration is supposed to happen - is that registration failed.  Instead, I got a prompt asking if a proxy is required to access the Internet.  Answer to that question is no, proxy not required.   After entering that, I didn't get an error or a confirmation that registration happenned.

Two other symptoms that may help isolation the issue:

(1) I am also able to print and copy using the HP Smart App on my Iphone, but I am NOT able to scan.   When I attempt to scan using the printer, I get this error message:  "printer not available"

(2) FYI, the printer is connected via ethernet to an Eero Router (which is connected by ethernet to a Verizon FiOS router), the laptop and phone use the Eero WiFi to connect to the printer.

Suggestions as to what else to try?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Are you able to copy?

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Let me know if this helps.

Update on this.   After a couple of restarts, I am able to scan using HPscan.exe - the windows program that this reinstall included with its shortcut on my desktop.  So I am back to functional - yay!

The HP Smart Windows and iOS apps still do not work, and return the error msgs noted in the subject line and above.

Thank you!
