The printer has always been connected directly to the laptop, and the cable is a USB 2.0

Go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info.  Under Hardware choose USB (on the left side).  Does the printer show up?

If so, there is some software issue, if not it is a USB port, cable or printer hardware issue.

Let me know what you find.

The printer shows up under the heading "USB High speed bus".

OK, good the hardware pieces are in place.

Let's make sure your OS X is healthy:

1. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo.
2. Download and install HP Printer Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6 from Apple.

I successfully downloaded and installed the updates . . . but same exact problem. I get the "Waiting for printer to become available" message even if I delete the job or pause the printer in the printer window before trying to print the next job. The only thing that works is to shut off the printer and re-start it.

Also, a question: Can I assume that the computer automatically deletes older applications and updates when newer ones are installed? I notice that my trash is empty.

So, any more things we can try? I appreciate your help on this, but nothing seems to be working.

This is strange.  I assume you have reset the printer or at least removed power from it for a few minutes?  It seems something is stuck.

I wouldn't say that I "reset" it exactly. I do shut off the power switch for about 15 seconds and turn it back on. Then it prints the next job. There have been a couple of other threads in the forum about this same problem. I emailed HP Support a few months ago about it and no reply as yet. Do you know if it's something they're working on?

Let's unplug the printer from the wall for 5 minutes then plug it in and restart.  This may offer a soft reset.

I have no idea if this issue is being worked on or not.  Even if I did, I could not reveal it :).

I was out of town for a week which is why I didn't reply. So I unplugged the printer for actually longer than 5 min. Same problem is happening. Any other suggestions, or is it time to admit defeat?

I am out of ideas.  How old is the printer?
