I'm using beta OS X High Sierra and somehow my HP 1510 stopped printing and displayed 'waiting for printer to become available'. It sent the page to print, the progress bar said the page had printed 100%, then displayed the error message. Nothing was ever printed on paper.
I tried combinations of advice, the HP test print was fine but this what finally worked after two days of noodling.
I downloaded the latest HP driver. I installed the full package so that HP Uninstall.app was installed. If you install the bare minimum, only HP Utility.app is installed and the uninstaller is not installed. You're going to need the uninstaller.
I then used the HP Uninstall.app to removed everything and there's a long list of HP files to remove.
I opened System Prefs, went to Printers & Scanners, CTRL click the printer and 'Reset Printing System'. Took the printer off the list.
I installed the driver again. For some reason after the driver is installed, a message appears to download the latest driver. I ignored it.
A utility windows popped up to scan the printer for information. If this window does not appear, uninstall and reinstall the driver. This is why you need to install the full HP driver package. Repeat until the utility window appears.
The utility window will try to scan for printer information. If it doesn't work, go back to the menu, select the printer, try again. Keep going back until the printer information is successfully received. The next menu will ask how you want the warning and information to appear. I tried, it didn't work, went back to the first menu, rescanned the printer information, continued, got the same error message, finally gave up and hit the 'Skip' button. Setup was successfully completed.
Printer works again.
The crux is to get the utility app to successfully scan the printer information. It only took two days of trial and error and persistence.
