"out of paper" error when there is paper in the tray

I understand this printer is now 9 years old and this is my last hope. I've read every other article I could find about how to fix this issue, but nothing has worked. Is there any place I could take this to to be looked at? Or is it just too old at this point to even bother with?

If you have already performed the steps from the document An 'Out of Paper' error displays, printer does not pick paper and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Since the device is out of warranty, and we've concluded that this is a hardware malfunction, I may have a few pointers/suggestions to help you out, however, since these suggestions are limited to you and your printer alone, I'd like to send out a private message with those details.
