I have an HP Laser Jet MFP M234dwe that is showing an error "rd" on the screen. I have tried every option I can find online to help clear this issue, but nothing has been successful. I cannot get the printer to do a reset because none of the buttons on the printer will function with this error on the screen. HP Smart app will not give me the access to reset or troubleshoot the printer because it is offline. I have it connected via ethernet cable. I downloaded the latest firmware and tried to install it but the printer is not accepting it because it shows it's offline. The printer literally went from working fine one day to the next day not working at all because of this error. Help please!

Hi @davidn612,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a persistent error with your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe. The "rd" error typically indicates a hardware issue, often related to the printer’s drum or a related component. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cable from the wall and the printer.
- Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect and Power On: Plug the power cable back in and turn the printer on.
Check for Paper Jams
- Open all the compartments (like the toner and paper trays) and look for any paper jams or obstructions. Remove any jammed paper or debris you find.
Reseat the Toner and Drum
- Open the Front Door: This will give you access to the toner and drum.
- Remove the Toner Cartridge: Carefully take out the toner cartridge.
- Check the Drum: Make sure the drum is seated correctly and is not damaged.
- Reinstall the Toner Cartridge and Close the Door: Ensure everything is properly seated and secured.
Check Connections
- Since you’re using an Ethernet connection, make sure the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the router. Try using a different Ethernet cable or port if available.
Firmware Update
- Since the printer is offline, this might be challenging. If possible, try connecting the printer to a different network or directly to a computer via USB to perform the update.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

This and any other "advise" from HP is not working.
Printer just reports "Rd". This is a rarely used printer and yet somehow it started to act up?
Tried both USB and CAT5 connection, to no avail. Can't factory re-set
