I probably know the answer to this question already, but has anyone had any problems using remanufactured ink cartridges instead of the HP brand type

You are right - people have had trouble with remanufactured cartridges in HP and other brand printers.

NOTE:

Be aware of the firmware update for this printer.

READ the description on the support page.

My interpretation:  If you have already installed the firmware update AND if your printer was manufactured after December 1, 2016, you may not be able to use the "off" brand (remanufactured) cartridges.

Except at noted for a particular printer or firmware update for that printer, HP does not prohibit you from using remanufactured ink - nor does HP support the practice.

The following comments assume your printer is not restricted from using non HP products:

Interestingly, the same people who use remanufactured ink and then damage the printer, sometimes blame the printer manufacturer for their having used an ink product in the printer for which there are not quality standards, no guarantees, and no support.

I found this printer on the 'net (in eBay, for example) for anywhere from $70 to $90 USD.

Using remanufactured cartridges in a printer can cause eventual and irreversible damage.

At least for a time, you might actually get away with the practice before "crud" damage ruins the print system.

You can decide whether the risk is worth the reward.  That means, if you don't care about the printer, if the printer will accept the non-HP remanufactured ink cartridges, and if the need to use remanufactured ink cartridges outweighs the desire to protect the ink system, then you should do as you wish.
