Hi @itsurf,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Forgetting the admin password for your HP Smart Tank 415 can be frustrating, especially when you're just trying to get things working again. But don’t worry, we’ll walk through the reset process together, step by step,

Resetting the Admin Password on HP Smart Tank 415

To reset the admin password, we’ll restore the printer to its factory default settings. This will clear the saved password and allow you to set it up fresh.

Steps to Restore Factory Defaults:

  1. Turn on your printer and make sure it’s idle (not printing or scanning).
  2. Press and hold the following buttons together on the control panel:
    • Cancel (X) + Wireless (📶) buttons
  3. Hold them for about 5 seconds until the Power light blinks or the printer restarts.
  4. Wait for the printer to reinitialize. This may take a minute or two.

Once reset, the printer will enter Wireless Setup Mode, and you can reconnect it using the HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.

Accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS) After Reset

If you want to set a new admin password:

  1. Find the printer’s IP address (print a Network Configuration Page by pressing the Information (i) button).
  2. Open a browser and type the IP address into the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.1.100).
  3. Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings.
  4. Set a new username and password.

Hi @itsurf,

We understand how confusing it can be when your HP Smart Tank 415 printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) asks for a username and password, especially when you’re just trying to access settings.

What You Can Try

1. Default Credentials

HP printers typically do not have a default password unless one was set. Try:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: leave blank

If this doesn’t work, proceed to the next step.

2. Reset EWS Credentials

To reset the EWS password:

  • Restore Network Settings:
    • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Power button blinks.
    • This resets the network settings and may clear EWS credentials.
  • Factory Reset (if needed):
    • This will reset all printer settings, including EWS login.
    • Refer to your printer’s User Guide for exact steps.

3. Access EWS via HP App

Sometimes accessing EWS through the HP app bypasses the login prompt:

  • Open the HP app.
  • Tap your printer > Advanced Settings.
  • This should open EWS in your browser without asking for credentials.

 I hope this helps.
