HP DeskJet 2633 All-in-One Printer

my deskjet 2633 has been set up for the first time, wi fi connection established, printer found by pc and print job sent successfully to the queue, but it won't print?  Printer information pages printed, but now ink levels are showing empty and colour ink symbol has flashing red light.  No error messages displayed on the printer but the pc has given different messages.  Said it was offline, but it's connected, then said 'printer needs attention'.  The previous owner had an instant ink account, but I don't want to buy new cartridges only to find that is not the problem.  Would empty cartridges stop it printing altogether, or just print blank or poorly printed pages? Any suggestions?

Hi @Berni50,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there could be a few different issues at play here. Let's address them step by step.

  • Empty Cartridges: Yes, empty cartridges can indeed prevent the printer from printing altogether, especially if the printer detects them as empty. Some printers may refuse to print if they detect empty cartridges, while others may print poorly or with missing colors. In your case, if the ink levels are showing as empty and there's a flashing red light, it's likely that the printer is not printing because it believes the cartridges are empty.
  • Instant Ink Account: If the printer was previously linked to an Instant Ink account, it's possible that the cartridges are locked to that account. In such cases, even if you install new cartridges, the printer may not recognize them until it's released from the previous owner's account.
  • Printer Offline/Needs Attention Message: These messages could indicate various issues, including connectivity issues between the printer and the computer, or the printer's status being affected by the empty cartridges. Since the printer was found by the PC and print jobs were sent successfully, connectivity might not be the main issue here.

Suggestions:

  • a. Check Cartridges: If you're unsure whether the cartridges are truly empty, you could try removing them, shaking them gently, and reinstalling them to see if the printer recognizes them differently.
  • b. Release from Instant Ink Account: If the printer was linked to an Instant Ink account previously, you'll need to ensure it's released from that account.
  • c. Printer Software/Driver Update: Ensure that both the printer drivers and software on your PC are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers or software can cause issues with printing.
  • d. Reset Printer: Try resetting the printer to its factory defaults. This might help clear any lingering settings or configurations from the previous owner.
  • e. Test with New Cartridges: If possible, borrow or purchase new cartridges to see if the printer behaves differently with them installed. This can help determine if the empty cartridges are indeed the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
