Hi @mhs76,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the HP Smart Tank 516, the printer generally requires all ink tanks to have ink, even if you only plan to print in black. This is because the printer may still use a small amount of color ink to keep the printhead nozzles clear and in good working condition. When any color ink tank is empty, the printer may stop printing entirely to avoid potential damage.
Here are a few options you could consider:
- Refill the Color Ink Tanks: If possible, refill the color ink tanks with HP compatible ink. This should allow you to resume printing in black.
- Set Printer to Black Ink Only (if available): Some printers allow you to set the print mode to "Grayscale" or "Black Ink Only" in the printer settings, which might allow printing using only the black ink tank. This option might be accessible in the HP Smart app or the print settings on your computer.
- Firmware Update: Check if there's a firmware update for your printer, as some updates may adjust settings for ink usage. The HP Smart app or HP’s support website can guide you through updating the firmware. Update the firmware on an HP printer
If you’d like help with any of these steps or exploring other potential settings, let me know!
