Hi! @sgreenwood, Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand you have print quality issues with your printer.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?
Try printing using a different brand of paper.
Try the steps recommended below.
Align the printer in OS X v10.11, El Capitan, OS X v10.10 Yosemite, OS X v10.9 Mavericks, or OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion.
Load U.S. Letter or A4 size, unused, plain paper into the input tray.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
In the menu bar, click the Apple icon.
Click System Preferences.
Click Printers and Scanners or Print & Scan.
Click the name of your printer, and then click Open Print Queue.
Click Printer Setup or Settings, click Utility and then click Open Printer Utility.
Click Align.
The printer prints an alignment page.
Lift the scanner lid.
Place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.
On your computer, click Scan.
The printer aligns the ink cartridges.
Print another Print Quality Diagnostic Page, and examine the page.
If these steps resolved the issue, you can stop troubleshooting.
If the Print Quality Diagnostic Page shows track marks or smears, continue to the next step to clean the area around the ink nozzles.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, and the Print Quality Diagnostic Page does not show track marks or smears, skip to the step to replace the problem ink cartridge.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot print quality issues with your printer.
Let me know if this helps!
Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

Hi - the original post pointred out that there is no utilities tab in the preferences. I have the same issue and cannot find how to clean the print heads that are printing in bands, probably due to non-use. Can you please help?
Best regards,
Darren.

I believe HP Utility is located in Applications inside the HP folder. On your Mac, click Finder, click Applications, click the Hewlett-Packard or HP folder, then double-click HP Utility. If HP Utility is not available, then download and install HP Utility from here.
Let me know how it goes!
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Have a great day!
