Name LBD4, printer is Envy 7640
Problem: unable to clear my print spooler.
Has been working fine. Yesterday I tried to print a PDF file from my document fine. When I tried to print, my printer just rang its little tune and displayed the normal screen of copy/fax/scan. Tried it again, same result.
In the past I know there was an app where I could manually remove/restart my print comands, but guess that is no longer available.
Went to your trouble shooting site and printed out the instructions as to how go to spooler from the services list. Did as instructed and then tried to print page again. Same result. Cannot print my PDF page. Said screen shows spooler running after I did the restart.
What am I doing wrong and how to correct it?

Good Day. Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I will be glad to assist you and let’s get right to it. Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue. It is amply appreciated.
Let me gather some information for better clarity to assist you correctly:
- Did you run HP print and scan doctor and check again?
- Did you try printing multiple PDF files?
- Did you install Adobe Reader and install the latest version and check again?
Meanwhile, I will be providing a roadmap with some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Let us try these steps:
- Perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-4650-all-in-one-printer-series/5447930/document/c0... perform steps from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer.
- Then update the printer’s firmware by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c02919168
- Use a USB cable to update the printer’s firmware.
- Make sure that all the latest Windows OS updates are completely and correctly installed on the Mac and the most current ones are updated.
Now try these steps:
Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
· Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
· Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
· Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
· Now check for issue resolution.
If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Restart your computer.
Now click https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-envy-7640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/... to download and install the software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
- This should fix the issue.
Other things to try:
- Uninstall and Adobe Reader and reinstall the latest version of it.
- If you are printing from a browser like Chrome or Edge, then reset the browser and if required uninstall and reinstall the browser.
- Then download HP Smart App to print and scan from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142 (HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10). It prints PDF files.
- Run HP print and scan doctor by following directions from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02073861
Now check for issue resolution. If it continues then perform all the relevant steps from this guided troubleshooter link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05368413 (HP Printers - Print Jobs Stuck in Queue Troubleshooting)
- This should do the trick for you.

Thank you for the response, but I have already resolved the problem. It turned out that there was not a problem with my printer, but with the pdf on my computer. I went to the particular web site I was seeking information and printed it withoust a problem. My download must have been defective. Again, Thank you, LBD4

I am glad that it was relevant to one specific file as I mentioned in my post also while asking some probing questions to check if you are able to print multiple PDF files.
Thank and have a great week ahead.
