Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a MFP M234dwe Laserjet which showed error 79. I tried the usual, turn off unplug restart and after evey attempt the error 79 keeps reappearing. I just used the printer within the last 48 hours of this problem and it worked fine. I would attempt to connect it to a USB but the printer has to be connected to the internet which it is not at this time. The only thing i changed was going from 2 sided to 1 sided printing in the last print job to print about 20 pages of a contract and it worked perfectly fine. I was hoping someone else may have had this problem and was able to repair it. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi @Shfftr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your Printer that has a 79 error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hi, Do you see the issue when it is connected to USB?

I tried all of the suggested above and nothing is working.  I can get the firmware update started but it hangs up at about 60% of install without finishing and only if the wifi router is completely turned off.  When you try to "add a new printer" via HP smart, it immediately faults to Error 79 after it asks you to confirm you're in the vicinity of the printer by pressing the flashing vicinity button.  This is all on an iMac which has worked flawlessly with this printer until yesterday when I came in to find it flashing a yellow light with the error 79 flashing. Something has been broken on HP's end I'm afraid. Power drain didn't work.  Everything else is the same as before.

This actually worked out!!!

Just follow the instructions as it is stated.

I called the service number and they told me, as my warranty expired, that I will have to pay $19 dollars to try to fix it, or suscribe to the monthly ink thing. Also, they were going to send me instructions to solve the problem myself and that never happened.
I won’t buy hp again in the future, this was a pain.
